R.A.F 1950s Pilots Log Books - Vampire - Meteor.

R.A.F 1950s Pilots Log Books - Vampire - Meteor.

Royal Air Force Pilots Flying Log Books to F/O M.T Laurence covering the period 1950 to 1962. Log Book 1 has an interesting endorsement from the Commanding Officer of R.A.F Driffield - On 15th January 1955 while flying solo at night in a Meteor 4, Flying Officer Laurence a student pilot with sixty hours flying experience on the Meteor was involved in a collision with another Meteor at 1000 feet over the airfield. As a result of the collision his canopy was shattered and the wingtip of the other aircraft became detached and jammed in the canopy framework. Despite the noise of the slipstream in his shattered canopy and wreckage projecting into the cockpit, Laurence maintained control of his aircraft and climbed to 8000 feet to assess the damage. With commendable coolness and courage he elected to land the aircraft and carried out an excellent controlled descent and landing. On touching down the wing tip of the other aircraft dropped into his lap, had that happened earlier it is unlikely that a safe descent could have been made. Log Book 1 covers the period January 1950 to February 1955. Aircraft flown - Tiger Moth, Chipmunk, Prentice, Harvard and Meteor. Units flown with Edinburgh University Air Squadron, Qualified for pilot wings July 1954 at No3 F.T.S Feltwell. N0 8 FTS RAF Driffield for training on Meteor 7. Log Book 2 cover the period November 1955 to September 1962. Joined No 603 Squadron RAF Turnhouse flying Meteor and Vampire. September 1956 moved to No 605 Squadron at RAF Honiley flying Vampire and Meteor. October saw the end of his jet flying and for the remaining of his career he instructed at various Air Experience Flight. Both logs are in good used condition well written with all correct signatures.
